Interview Questions

Tell Us About Yourself (Laurentiu Toma):
I live in Romania, a beautiful country with many artistic and cultural values … but I do not think that the design I do has anything to do with the place where I live. I believe that the influence of the Internet is bigger than anything … unfortunately.

What are your Hobbies?
Movies, music, fine arts.

What about your experience with design?
I worked about 10 years in design area.

What kind of Design Services you provide?
logo design.

How would you describe your style?
I’m not sure if i have a style…in fact i don’t want to have a style, i just try to invent things and to be better than yesterday 🙂

How did you get your first job in design and what exactly was it?
Somewhat randomly. Years ago, after I graduated from the Faculty of Arts (Painting specialization), I worked as a drawing teacher for a while. One day, a friend contacted me and told me about a job at an IT company, I was interviewed and subsequently I got hired at that company as a graphic designer(even now I do not know why). I did not know much about computers, design … but slowly I learned and I achieved performances through hard work. I still like to think that I’m more an artist than a designer. Design is a challenge for me, a way to live, a method through which I can test my skills and patience … and why not, a source of financial earning.

What plans do you have for the future?
I don’t have, I’m in God hands.

Your expert areas
Art Institute of Timisoara graduated, where I did five years of painting which is still my passion and I can declare myself more of an expert than in the Design area. I consider Design as being a rank in Art and this would make it easier for me to have realistic opinions about a good done job or a poorly done one. This would not be possible without a long term of studies.

Your tools of work
Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Photoshop … any kind of graphic tools.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration for graphic design?
Hmm, hard to say. I think my inspiration comes from everywhere. First I try to inspire from myself, then I look around to see what other designers are working. Usually I have an eye to the professional designers, because I know that from them I learn the most…I am not interested in the weak designers at all. Of course it is also about imagination, talent, experience … all these together help in the creative process. I do not think the idea and the technique is everything, I think a balance between the two is the way to perfection.

For me it’s simply because I cannot say I have a rule, I try to work as best and hard I can and if I manage to be happy with myself, then I am on the right road.

What advice would you give to other designers?
Professionalism, ambition, perseverance. Success does not necessarily mean making money or winning contests, but to be respected. You earn respect not by how much money you make and how many contests you win, but by what you are and what you can do.

Being appreciated and respected is the biggest success.

What do you think about tutorialsbucket.com?
I think it is Great, a nice opportunity to learn!
